Testing & Quality Assurance — LinSys Software
LinSys Software’s testing and QA practice provided structured verification and validation services for Linux-based products and kernel modifications. Engagements ranged from one-off regression testing to multi-month engagements building out automated test infrastructure for client products.
Testing services offered
- Functional testing — verifying that features behaved as specified, including edge cases and error paths
- Regression testing — confirming that changes didn’t break previously-working behavior
- Performance testing — measuring throughput, latency, and resource usage under defined workloads (in collaboration with the Performance Engineering team)
- Stress and stability testing — running systems under extended load to flush out memory leaks, race conditions, and resource exhaustion failures
- Kernel-specific verification — using KGDB to validate kernel state under specific test conditions
- Test automation infrastructure — building CI pipelines, automated test runners, and reporting dashboards
Methodology
The QA practice combined manual exploratory testing with systematic automated verification. For kernel-level work, this included specialized techniques like fault injection (deliberately corrupting kernel state to test error handling), kdump-based crash analysis, and KGDB-mediated post-mortem inspection of kernel panics.
Modern equivalents
The conceptual framework for testing hasn’t fundamentally changed since the LinSys era, but tooling has evolved significantly. Modern practitioners use Linux Test Project (LTP) for system call testing, kselftest for kernel feature verification, syzkaller for fuzzing the kernel system call surface, and CI infrastructure like KernelCI for automated cross-platform kernel testing. The testing methodology LinSys applied transfers directly to those modern tools.
Related services
Testing engagements were often combined with Product Maintenance (regression testing before releases) and Migration & Rebasing (validating ported code).
